The American Research Institute in Turkey is pleased to announce the Ilse B. Hanfmann, George M. A. Hanfmann, and Machteld J. Mellink Fellowships for 2024. The purpose of these fellowships is to enable citizens of the Republic of Turkiye, who are PhD students working on their PhD theses at Turkish universities or who are recent PhD holders and are currently in Turkiye working towards a career in Turkiye, to conduct research in affiliation with universities or research institutions abroad (in North America or elsewhere) for a period ranging from three months to nine months. Candidates of PhD degrees who have finished all course work and passed all qualifying examinations for the degree before entering the tenure of a Hanfmann/Mellink Fellowship are eligible, as are scholars who have received their PhD and have not yet reached 41 years of age by the date of the application deadline. Selection criteria are excellence in promise and achievement. Financial need by itself is not a selection criterion. Candidates need to demonstrate proficiency in the language they will need to conduct at their host institution. Eligible host institutions include universities qualified in archaeology or related fields at graduate level, institutions with important research assets, museums, and archaeological schools. Three letters of recommendation from scholars familiar with the applicant's work are required. Applications must be submitted via e-mail as a single pdf file to either the Istanbul branch of the Ankara branch of ARIT. Please visit the fellowship's website for more information about the program and the required materials.
